On September 1st, a routine traffic stop in Cave City led to the arrest of, a resident of the area, on multiple drug-related charges. The incident unfolded when CCPD K-9 Officer Garth Avery observed a vehicle on Mammoth Cave Street failing to properly illuminate its headlamps, prompting the stop. Upon pulling the vehicle over, Poynter, the operator, provided verbal consent for officers to search the vehicle.

The situation escalated when K-9 Officer Jacob Kersey deployed K-9 “Mako” to the scene. The trained dog quickly alerted to the presence of illegal substances within the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed multiple small bags of suspected marijuana and a pipe suspected of being used for methamphetamine consumption. Further investigation, including a search of Poynter’s person, uncovered additional contraband: a small bag of suspected marijuana, a set of digital scales, and a container containing what was suspected to be crystal methamphetamine.

Poynter was arrested and taken to the Barren County Detention Center, where he was charged with several offenses. These included failure to illuminate headlamps, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance in the first degree (specifically methamphetamine, marking his third or greater offense), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

This incident underscores the ongoing efforts of local law enforcement to curb drug-related activities in the area. K-9 units, like Officer Kersey and K-9 “Mako,” play a crucial role in these operations, providing vital support in identifying and seizing illegal substances.
