This week is National Work Zone Safety Week. As the spring construction season kicks off in Kentucky, state officials want to remind drivers to slow down in work zones. They say a split second of driver distraction can turn a work zone into a death zone. Erin Eggen with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet discusses this important issue…

Several large construction projects are currently under way here in south central Kentucky:

• In Warren County: Scottsville Road interchange reconstruction at
      I- 65; and, US 31-W reconstruction between the Natcher          Parkway and Dillard Road

• In Barren County: KY 90 reconstruction from Glasgow to KY 2198

• In Edmonson and Barren Counties: I-65 widening from four to six lanes between the Cumberland Parkway and Cave City
• In Monroe and Metcalfe Counties: KY 163 reconstruction from Bushong to KY  90 in Metcalfe County

The department asks motorists to practice 10 work zone safety tips:

1. Expect the unexpected.
2. Slow down.
3. Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between vehicles.
4. Keep a safe distance from workers and equipment.
5. Pay attention to signs.
6. Obey road crew flaggers.
7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.
8. Keep up with the traffic flow.
9. Schedule enough time and call 511 or go to www.511.ky.gov for Kentucky traffic and travel information.
10. Be patient and stay calm.
