May 1, 1972 – The Glasgow Scottie Band will perform in the Ky. Derby “Pegasus” Parade in Louisville Thursday.

Charles Wright and Steve James, Park City High School Class of ’72 have been notified by WKU that they have been selected to receive the Ky. Dept. of Hwy. Scholarships in Civil Engineering Technology.

Jimmy Robertson, Edmonton and Walker Thomas, Ft. Run, won the 3rd annual District Pitch Tournament at Nobob Sportsman Club.

The Abundant Life Christian Home, 1002 Glenview Dr., officially opened last week. Julian O Hunt and his son, Rev. Raleigh Van Hunt are owners.

May 2, 1972 – Kenneth Pace is named the new Chief of the Glasgow Fire Department. He was the first paid fireman hired by retiring Chief Russell Francis.

May 3, 1972 – Park City Bank is robbed and in a sidelight to the robbery, a former Cave City Police Chief Billy Ray Martin was shot and wounded by a Park City Minister who mistakenly thought he was one of the robbers.

May 4, 1972 – Park City Bank Robbers still at large.

Glasgow Police Chief Robert Benningfield is dismissed by City Council.

May 5, 1972 – Major Jimmy Smith is named as Interim Chief of Glasgow Police Dept.

May 8, 1972 – The Maurice B Furlong was formally recognized Friday as the Kentucky Farmer Home Administration Farm Family of the year.

May Births – Kiley Elizabeth Barrick, William Jason Poore, Bradley Cannon, Jeremy Scott Wilkinson, Mary Ellen Morris, Trisha Carol Polson, Eric Brian Garmon, and Eric Wayne Johnson.

May 9, 1972 – GHS Concert Choir presents Spring Concert. Madrigal Singers include Connie Cary, Karen Wagner, Kathy Wagner, Debbie Marshall, Lynn Hatchett, Stephen Biggers, Steven Hale, Keith Lyle, David Clements and Allen Barrett.

Liberty St. Spelling Bee winners are Mary Ann Lyons, Sharon D Pierce, and Richard G Wooten.

May 11, 1972 – The 1970 Census of Housing counted 10, 164 housing units in Barren County and 8, 845 households had at least one TV.

May 12, 1972 – Dannie Arterburn, Glasgow native, has the lead role of Stephen Foster in the Stephen Foster Story in its 14th season in Bardstown.

HHS Honor Students are Faye Davis, Val., Kenneth Edwards, Sal., and Judy Parker and Barbara Sexton.

May 16, 1972 – Hiseville Boys and Temple Hill Girls win the Barren County Track Titles.

May 17, 1972 – Vickie Atkins and Jane Rhea Butler, have been selected to be a finalist in the 1972 Miss Ky. Teenager Pageant.

May 18, 1972 – 7 teachers are retiring from Glasgow Independent Schools: Mrs. Pauline Cole, Mrs. Mary Dell Carey, Mrs. Elizabeth Siegfried, Mrs. Carrie Morrison, Mrs. Lena Brown Harpst, Mrs. Jessie Middleton, and Mrs. Lucille Wood.

May 22, 1972 – 13 year old Chester Allen Huff drowns in a pond on a farm near Haywood.

Danny J Basil, one of 12 ROTC cadets at UK, is commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force.

May 23, 1972 – The Glasgow Common Council named Glasgow Scottie Band Director Charles B Honeycutt to the council. He replaces Jack Barrett who resigned last week.

May 24, 1972 – Glasgow High School Honor Students are George McKinley, Val., and tied for Sal. Is Sue Cutliffe and Alan Cox.

May 25, 1972 – Work has begun on the $500,000 addition to GTE offices on W. Washington St.

Caverna Colonels Baseball team wins the Regional tournament 9-1 over Todd Co. Central. Coy Meadows was the coach.

May 26, 1972 – Rodeo Week is kicked off in Park City with a street dance on Thursday. Proceeds from the event will go to the newly established Medical Center in Park City.

May 29, 1972 – Beach at Barren River opens this Memorial Day weekend and campgrounds are full and running over.

May 30, 1972 – Park City Co-Val. Are Loretta Martin and Charles Wright, and Sa. Was Steve James. Temple Hill Val. Is Sheryl Jane Bowman, Sal. Is Sandra Lou Grizzle. Austin Tracy Val. Is Lynn Strode and Sal. Is Linda Norris.
