SYNTHETIC DRUG LEGISLATION PASSES IN U.S. SENATE PDF Print E-mail

The United States Senate and House have now passed “Synthetic Drug” legislation.

After much support from Senator Mitch McConnell, the bill passed the final hurdles in the Senate Tuesday afternoon and would make synthetic drugs, like bath salts and synthetic marijuana, illegal under federal law.

This bill would also enable the DEA and other federal agencies to make seizures and arrests as synthetic drugs enter the country, as most synthetic drugs are imported from China and Europe.

And in addition to scheduling the synthetic drugs, the new law would double the length of time a substance may be placed in Schedule I. The bill explicitly names 26 substances and also creates a new definition for “cannabamimetic agents”—or chemical compounds created to mimic the effects of cannabis—creating criteria by which similar compounds can be controlled, too.

The bill also has provisions to enhance communication across state lines for prescription drug monitoring programs.
