On December 26, 2012 at approximately 3:12 a.m. , Kentucky State Police Trooper Jeremy Smith observed a vehicle stationary off of the northbound shoulder of I-65 near the 64 mile post marker. The vehicle in question appeared to have been involved in an accident and was against a tree. Trooper Smith made contact with both occupants in which the passenger, a juvenile (17), was found unresponsive. The operator, 20-year-old Kyle Klein of Plant City, FL, was found responsive, however, could not provide any detail about the incident.

Through investigation it was determined that Unit One, a 2005 Mercury Montego, was northbound on I-65 near the 64 mile post marker. The weather condition in the area at the time was moderate rainfall. The operator of Unit One lost control of his vehicle causing it to rotate in the roadway. Unit One then struck a temporary concrete barrier before crossing back over both lanes of the interstate. Unit One then left the right side of the roadway where it continued through a large sign post and came to final rest against a tree. The passenger was extricated by mechanical means.

Both occupants were removed from the scene by Hart County EMS and were assisted by the Munfordville Volunteer Fire Department. The operator was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The passenger was transported to Caverna Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. He is listed in critical condition. Both occupants were wearing seat belts. Toxicology results are pending. This investigation continues.
