MULTIPLE COLLISONS ON CUMBERLAND PARKWAY IN BARREN COUNTY PDF Print
Tuesday, 26 March 2013 15:31

On Tuesday March 26th, 2013 around 6:18 a.m. Trooper Jonathan McChesney received a complaint of an injury collision on the Cumberland Parkway ramp westbound onto Interstate 65.  When Trooper McChesney arrived on the scene, he learned there had been a total of four collisions in which three of them were injury collisions.  The investigation shows that Terry Gray (64) of Glasgow struck the ice covered Interstate 65 overpass causing him to lose control of his 1999 GMC pickup. Mr. Gray then exited the left shoulder of the roadway and struck a guardrail in which his vehicle went over the guardrail into the east bound on ramp of the parkway.  His truck came to final rest against the guardrail facing North.

Moments after the first collision, a second vehicle driven by Hannah Short (18) of Bowling Green was westbound when she observed the truck from the first collision.  As Mrs. Short attempted to slow her 1999 Nissan, she also struck the ice covered overpass causing her to lose control.  Mrs. Short exited the left shoulder of the roadway and struck a guardrail which deflected her vehicle back across both westbound lanes into a second guardrail.

As Ms. Short exited her vehicle, a third vehicle driven by Marsha Varner (52) of Glasgow attempted to slow due to the collisions.  Mrs. Varner struck the ice and lost control of her 2002 Pontiac and struck a guardrail.  After striking the guardrail her vehicle was deflected back across both westbound lanes where she side swiped Mrs. Short's vehicle.  The impact from Varner's car into Short's car caused the vehicle to strike Mrs. Short who had exited her vehicle.  Mrs. Varner then continued back across both westbound lanes where her vehicle came to final rest facing south in the median. A fourth non injury accident occurred just moments after the first three as a result of the ice covered overpass.

All three drivers from the injury accidents were transported by the Barren Metcalfe EMS to T.J. Samson Community Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries as a result of the collisions.  Trooper McChesney was assisted on the scene by Tpr. Tommie Walters, Park City Fire, and Barren Metcalfe EMS.
