Virginia Frances Akers Downing, 91, of Glasgow, KY died Monday, June 24, 2013, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital.  Born in Glasgow on June 1, 1922, she was a daughter of the late George H. Akers, Sr. and Mamie Alice Goff Akers.

Virginia was a graduate of Glasgow High School (1939) and Sullins College in Bristol, VA.  She was a homemaker, a former employee of the New Farmers National Bank, and more recently had been associated with her late husband, John Calloway (“J.C.”) Downing, in Cook & Downing Insurance Agency (now Cook, Downing, & Underwood.)  J.C. and Virginia had been married for 63 years at the time of his death.  She was a longtime member of the Glasgow Baptist Church and the 3 L’s Sunday School Class, and was a member of the Glasgow Garden Club.

She is survived by two daughters who adored her, Anne Grant Underwood and husband Buddy, and Jenny Jean Downing, all of Glasgow; two grandchildren, Josh Underwood and wife Sabrina of Glasgow, and Jenny Kate Guy and husband, Jamie, of Mableton, GA; one great-granddaughter, Anniston Banks Guy, and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Homer Akers, Jr. of Glasgow and two sisters, Elizabeth Caroland of St. Louis, MO, and Marjorie Mazur of Columbia, SC.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the A. F. Crow & Son Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of memorial contributions to the Glasgow Baptist Church, Barren River Animal Welfare Association (BRAWA) or Community Medical Care.
