While shop local initiatives have started in a few cities throughout Kentucky, Treasurer Todd Hollenbach is the first to make it a statewide initiative.  In an opinion editorial sent out this week, Treasurer Hollenbach urges Kentuckians to “Shop Local, Eat Local” as they holiday shop on Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  “I encourage each of you to look to your locally owned businesses as an opportunity to support your local economy and community,” Treasurer Hollenbach states in his op-ed, emphasizing the important role that small businesses play in communities across Kentucky.

“Small business reinvests three times more money locally than corporate chains,” says Treasurer Hollenbach.  “During this recession, it has been small businesses that have added jobs and been a source of economic growth.”  Treasurer Hollenbach also discusses how locally owned businesses contribute to and strength community ties.

“I hope Kentuckians will think of the importance of “Shop Local, Eat Local” year round, not just this one day.  Eating at the neighborhood family restaurant, choosing a friend’s dry cleaning business, shopping at the third generation shoe store you went to with your parents when you were young, these are the things that strengthen our communities.  Not just economically, but culturally.  It creates a strong community in economy, unity, and tradition.  And that’s what Kentucky’s all about.”
