Gavin is a nine year old 3rd grade student at Red Cross Elementary and Tyler is a Senior at Barren County High School. When Tyler heard the outreach coordinator of Big Brothers Big Sisters speak to his class about the school based mentoring program in Glasgow and Barren County, he knew that was something he would like to try. Tyler was matched on August 15, 2013 with his new "Little  Brother" Gavin.

Once each week Tyler travels to Red Cross Elementary to spend approximately 45 minutes with Gavin. Their time together includes working on reading skills, checking homework, playing board games, and sometimes just talking about whatever is on Gavin's mind.

Just a few weeks ago Gavin's mother told her son's teacher that she has seen a positive change in Gavin since being matched with Tyler. Several of the faculty and staff at Red Cross echoed mom's sentiments. They also have noticed how much more excited Gavin is about school in general. One of Gavin's teachers told the outreach coordinator, "There is definitely a close bond between Tyler and Gavin. The way they carry on with one another you’d think they were really brothers."

Currently there are (23) school based matches and (8) community based matches in Glasgow and Barren County. Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of several non- profit organizations in Barren County that receive funding through United Way of Southern Kentucky. When you give to United Way you are helping folks like Gavin receive the mentor he so desperately needed. And if you were to take a moment and ask Gavin what he thinks about his "Big Brother" Tyler, well, he usually sums it up in a couple of words: "He's cool!"
