Robert Mitchell Borders Jr. was born February 4, 1951, to Marian Wanda and Robert Mitchell Borders Sr. Known in his childhood home town of Glasgow, KY, as Robbie, RoBo, or possibly some other unmentionable names, those nicknames were immediately stripped from him the very first day of his enlistment into the United States Marine Corp at which time he would become “Bob” forevermore.

Although his life was short lived, it was full of adventure.  After two tours of duty in Vietnam, Bob continued to challenge himself via rock climbing and mountaineering in places like the Wind Rivers and Tetons in Wyoming.  Then he would settle back down in Glasgow for some years operating the Borders Monument Company.  Upon leaving the business he traveled, vacationed and eventually lived for a while in Jamaica where he met and married his “Chrissy”.  Oh, and if you were ever on a party barge in Ocho Rios, the “moon” that you might have sighted atop the cliff at the turn-around in Mahogany Bay, well - always the prankster - it was probably Bob!

Searching for the sun, sand and beach, Bob and Chris bought a home in Sarasota, Florida.  Here he reunited with and became very active with his Vietnam Veterans and other military family and friends, fulfilling a significant role in his life.

Always the husband, Daddy, brother, son, and true friend…once you found a place in his heart, you would know Bob Borders.  Bob was a kind, genuine, caring and passionate man - always giving - humble to a fault.  He was a man of purpose who wanted to be remembered as having made a contribution during his life here on earth.  Not only did he give of himself to his fellow man and those less fortunate, he gave generously to the community in countless ways.  His contributions were many but discreet, and that’s exactly how he wanted it.

Bob’s life on earth is over now, but his love, life, generosity, and wonderful memories will be alive forever. Bob passed away on Saturday, April 5, after a short stay at Bill Young VA Hospital in Florida.  Preceding him in death were grandparents Curtis and Lois Sherrell and Melissa and William Borders, mother Marian Wanda Sherrell Borders, wife Pattie Cundiff Borders, and infant son Mitchell Cain.

Survivors are his wife Christine Sinnott Borders and her supportive family in Florida, Michigan, Georgia and Kentucky; daughter Lois Sherrell Borders Powell (Jim), father Robert Mitchell Borders Sr., brothers Mark Borders and H. Kay Borders (Patty),  sisters Susie Borders Fields and Mary Ann Blair (Art). He has one grandson, Devon, and several nieces and nephews.

Bob is a United States Marine Corp Veteran, and a military salute/service will be held on Friday, April 11, at Sarasota National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for June 8 at Sportsman’s Lake in Hodgenville, KY, at 2:00 p.m.
