Today is the local option election in Cave City, in which city residents will be able to vote whether the city will go wet and allow package liquor sales inside the city limits.  Local option elections follow all the same rules as a general election and the polling locations will be open from 6am-6pm.  If you are in line at 6pm you will be allowed to vote.  Only residents living within the city limits of Cave City are eligible to vote.  The ballot will include one question which will read “Are you in favor of the sale of alcoholic beverages in Cave City, Ky?”  The voter will vote “yes” or “no”.

When the polls close, all votes will be totaled and then certified by the Barren County Board of Elections.  The results will then be filed with the County Clerk.  If the majority of Cave City residents vote “yes”, September 20th, which is 60 days after the July 22nd election the ‘wet’ status will go into effect.

Liquor licensing is done through the Kentucky ABC.  To apply for a license, several requirements must be met.  An individual must be at least 21 years old, a Kentucky resident for the past year and a US citizen.  Any owner, partner, officer, director or interested party cannot get a license if they have been convicted of any felony during the past five years, or an alcohol or controlled substance related misdemeanor during the past two years.

The application may be downloaded from the ABC’s website and is 29 pages in length.  .

Applicants must attach copies of statewide criminal background checks no more than 30 days old.  (A separate criminal background check must be included for each state in which the applicant resided during the past five years.)  A copy of the land deed or lease must be included with the application, along with Kentucky sales tax numbers.  The rules for corporations seeking a license depend on the type and size of the group.

It is also is required that each applicant must advertise their intention to apply for an ABC license one time in a newspaper that circulates in the area the premises is to be licensed
