ballotSomewhere between 75 and 90 days from now, packaged alcohol will be sold in Cave City.  Yesterday, a local option election was held in Cave City with one question on the ballot: “Do you approve of the sale of alcohol in the city limits of Cave City?”  The “Yes” votes outnumbered the “No” votes by nearly a 2-1 margin.  According to our results at WCLU News, 230 Yes votes were cast while 132 no votes were cast.  Cave City Mayor, Dewayne Hatcher, gave his immediate reaction.

For the city to officially become ”Wet” a few things must take place.  First, the board of elections will have to certify yesterday’s election.  60 days after that takes place, the city will officially become wet.  But, before retailers can apply for a license to sell packaged liquor, the city must first adopt ordinances to govern the sale and determine what regulatory fees will be assessed.  Also, based on the population of Cave City, there will have to be two liquor stores in the city limits.  The most their can be is two, but there can not be just one as the law would deem that a monopoly.

Mayor Hatcher went on to address the concerns of those voters who are not in favor of packaged liquor sales.

Also, he said, in three years from now, voters can file a petition to remove the wet status and return to a dry city if a group wants to get the petition going.

Once again, the “Yes” votes win by a 96 vote margin, and Cave City will soon be classified as wet and the sale of packaged liquor will take place.
