Community Calendar Events Saturday, May 18, 2013

Fountain Run BBQ Festival will be today. Today's activities include: pancake breakfast at 6AM, Arts and Crafts booth set up from 6AM to 9AM, Rollin Rods Classic Car Show and Antique Tractors and Motorcycles from 9AM to 12PM and parade at 10AM with several performances and activities to follow.

The Driver License Division will be open today from 8AM to 11AM instead of Saturday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.

AARP and Landshark will have the shredding truck today from 10AM to 2PM at K-Mart. Old documents, personal information files, records and junk mail may be shredded but not plastic or cardboard.

The Liberty District Association will observe the 100th Birthday of the Late Mayor Luska J. Twyman, today at 2:30PM at the Bunche Center.

Summer Shade Elementary Homecoming Celebration will be today from 2PM to 5PM. The Opening Ceremony and Flag Raising will be at 2PM, Closing Ceremony at 5PM and Ballgame with former students at 6PM. There will be a group picture taken in front of the school, a presentation of school history, bouncy houses for children, displays of pictures, trophies, uniforms and yearbooks and a mini program by current students. Commemorative shirts and refreshments will also be available.

Barren County Middle School's School-Based Decision Making Council will meet Monday, May 20 at 3PM at the school.

Anna Shaw, Program Director of the Grateful Hearts Support Group will host a tour of the new TJ Health Pavilion, Monday, May 20 at 6PM in place of this month’s group meeting.

Knit or Crochet with Zadie and Card Making with Janett Corry will be Tuesday, May 21 at 6PM at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. Bring hook or needles and yarn. The Card making theme is Fathers Day and Birthday and kit cost is $5.

BASE Soccer Academy Try-out will be Friday, May 24 from 5PM to 7PM at Barren River Soccer Complex. There will be 36 players’ ages 9 to 12 accepted. Those attending the try-out are asked to bring a size 4 or 5 soccer ball, shinguards, cleats and water. The cost will be $20 per player. For sign up information or questions contact B. Monroe County Relay for Life will be Friday, May 24 at the Darrell Carter Stadium. Opening Ceremonies will start at 6:30PM.

Barren County School Systems open enrollment for summer child care is ongoing through Monday, May 27.  Child care will be available Monday through Friday from 6:30AM to 5:30PM, beginning Thursday, May 23 and continuing through Friday, July 26 at Red Cross Elementary. Enrollment fee is $15 per child. Parents will only be charged for days their child is actually attending summer child care. Breakfast, Lunch and snacks will be provided. Registration forms and Parent Information Handbooks will be available in the school office at any of the seven elementary schools in Barren County plus the Barren County Board of Education. The Barren County Courthouse will be closed Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.

Summer Reading Registration will be Tuesday, May 28 through Friday, June 7 at the Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library. Earn prizes for reading and enjoy fun and exciting programs.

The Glasgow Highland Games will be Friday, May 31 thru Sunday, June 2 at the Barren River Lake State Resort Park. There will be fantastic entertainment, extraordinary athletics, exciting children’s games, delicious food, shopping, dancing and other fun festival events. For more information call 651-3141.

The Caveman Chorus presents American Bandstand and special guest Forefront, Saturday, June 1 at 7PM in WKU's Van Meter Auditorium. Tickets will be $15 at the door and $12 in advance, $5 for students and children under age 5 are free.

The American Red Cross will have a blood drive Wednesday, June 12 from 1PM to 6PM at Bowling Community Park in Leftwich Hall.

The 2013 Post 15 Trooper Island Golf Scramble will be Monday, June 17 at 9AM at Lakewood Country Club in Russell Springs, Kentucky with registration at 8AM. The entry fee is $240 per team of 4 players which includes: golf, cart, lunch and 1 mulligan per team. There will be several prizes awarded and the top three winning team will receive entry into the "Big Tournament". The Glasgow Parks & Recreation Swimming Lesson sign ups are ongoing. There will be several different sessions offered with morning and afternoon options. The cost will be $40 and participants must be at least 5 years old. For more information call 651-3811 or 651-9012.

The 2013 Glasgow Parks & Recreation Day Camp registration is ongoing. Participants will enjoy swimming, sports, crafts, guest speakers, movie day and field trip day. The cost will be $40 for the first child and $35 for each additional child of the same household. There will be sessions for ages 5 to 7 and ages 8 to 10 with the first session beginning June 10.
