SOMA, Glasgow Dance Theatre presents ‘The Rite of Spring’ this weekend

By Mark Buckles Mar 17, 2021 | 8:38 AM

GLASGOW, Ky. — SOMA Center for Dance and Glasgow Dance Theatre will present “The Rite of Spring” at the turn of spring this weekend.

The show is a choreographed masterpiece that tells the story of a “chosen one” who becomes a sacrifice for a village. The “chosen one” is selected by “an elder” from several villagers. The show follows a former pagan ritual.

“The Rite of Spring is actually one of the ballets that altered the world of music and the world of dance forever,” Edwards said.

Elise Wilson and Dakota Lile, both students at SOMA and Glasgow Dance Theatre, play the parts of the “chosen ones.” Wilson will take the part Friday, March 19, and Lile will play the part Saturday, March 20.

“We really found a lot of our Glasgow heritage as we worked through this ballet,” said SOMA Center for Dance instructor, Trevor Edwards.

The dance institution will host a “Garden Party Day Camp” March 20 for students interested in dance. The camp is open to students ages six to 10. The camp is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A silent auction is also planned.

“We think this is just such a good time to share this edge breaking ballet with our community,” Edwards said.

Virtual tickets are available at somaky.org/tickets.

SOMA Center for Dance and Glasgow Dance Theatre is located at 665 Happy Valley Road in Glasgow. The dance studio inhabits the former Carhartt Clothing Outlet.
