GLASGOW — Keeping the community safe is a priority for the Glasgow Police Department, but doing it well is another. The department received earlier this month news it scored 100 percent on its Safety and Liability Review.

Glasgow Police employees a department of officers used to accountability. It’s woven into the department’s culture.

“We as an agency were very proud we were able to accomplish a score of 100 percent,” said GPD Public Information Officer Major Terry Flatt.

The Kentucky League of Cities completed the review. Leadership, training and policy are three categories used to assess departments across the state.

Glasgow Police Department also maintains accreditation. The KLC Safety and Liability Review provided additional support for the law enforcement agency’s efficacy.

“It’s a little bit higher standard than accreditation,” Flatt said.

The review required supervisor accountability, adequate supplies in vehicles, and department maintenance and use of body cameras and firearms.

“And just making sure we just basically dot all of our I’s and all of our T’s,” Flatt said.

The department seeks to send a positive message to citizens and the community. The department tries to keep officers engaged with the community, which helps them build trust with the agency.

Citizens in Glasgow express their thanks to officers most days, Flatt said.

“We would hope that the citizens out in the community would be proud to have an agency that served them that was making sure supervisors are properly trained, the officers are properly trained and each and every officer has the equipment needed to help serve and protect to the best of their ability,” Flatt said.

The Safety and Liability Review is completed every two years. Accreditation occurs every four. The department is slated to undergo review for reaccreditation later this year.
