GLASGOW — The primary election draw was held across Kentucky Thursday, and local candidates participated at the Barren County Government Center.

There will not be a countywide Democratic primary election this year. The few Democrats on the ballot are magisterial candidates. Those candidates are elected by constituents across certain districts.

Dr. Troy A. Robertson is a candidate for Barren County Magistrate District 5. The district covers most of Barren County’s westside like the Red Cross, Bon Ayr and Rocky Hill communities.

“I didn’t know we would even do this to be honest with you,” Robertson said. “The clerk called and said the drawing would be this day, and I didn’t know if this was something they just took care of, or we showed up for. I learned that when she told me on the phone, but it’s a pretty simple process.”

Robertson is a first-time candidate for political office like many others on this year’s ballot. He was joined at the drawing alongside those newcomers, those who’ve been local candidates and some incumbents.

Helena C. Birdwell, Barren County Clerk, said election preparations are underway. The most immediate business to complete was the filing of candidates and the ballot drawing.

“It’s just the first opportunity for them to present themselves as a candidate and do something in person for the office that they’re running for,” Birdwell said.

The primary election is scheduled May 17, 2022.
