GLASGOW — April showers may bring May flowers, but they have also brought setbacks in the construction of the new South Green Elementary School building.

Tommy Gumm, CEO of Alliance Corporation, who manages the construction of the building, spoke to members of the Glasgow Board of Education Monday evening, providing an update on the new school.

“We’re pouring concrete for the foundation of the building,” he informed the board. “The entire building pad is on grade, but we have to proof roll all of that to make sure we have the right compaction.”

Due to the amount rain Glasgow and all of Barren County have received in recent weeks, Alliance Corporation has only been able to compact about 85% of the building, according to Gumm.

“We’re just waiting on this weather to clear up,” he said. “We need a little sunlight,a little bit of drying.”

Alliance Corporation did find some areas of uneven soil on the site’s foundation but Gumm says it’s been very minimal.

“It hasn’t slowed us down,” he said. “American Engineers have been on site, they have checked out the bearing capacity and if it is not adequate, they will tell us what to do as far taking material out, putting stone in and compacting the stone. Once that is approved, then we can pour the concrete.”

Demolition has began on the front of the old South Green Elementary School building; electricians have come on site and have given their stamp of approval as well. Once the concrete has been poured and the foundation has been laid, the next step is to begin building vertically.

Although the weather did cause minor setbacks, Gumm states the construction continues moving forward without impediment.

“There are no delays of any significance at this point,” he told WCLU News.
