GLASGOW — The Glasgow School Board met in regular session Monday evening where further updates were provided on the construction of the new South Green Elementary School.

Allison Cummings, associate principal architect with Sherman Carter Barnhart, provided the board with photographs of progress that is being made during the early stages of the building process.

“The building is starting to take shape,” she said. “The insulated concrete forms have started around the perimeter of the foundation. They started up towards the front entrance of the addition and they are working their way down to the southwest and around the end of the classroom wing.”

Workers have also began adding underslab plumbing to the foundation and will continue to pour footings until mid-July with the hope that walls will be built to the second level of the building by the end of summer.

“They are starting [to build the walls] in the main entrance, the administrative suite and the cafeteria. It’s very exciting to see the building take shape,” Carter said.

That’s the good news.

Unfortunately, due to the current inflation, supply shortages and a spike in housing demands as well as commercial real estate properties, local concrete companies are on allocation when it comes to getting cement from their suppliers.

“We are only allocated 60 cubic yards of concrete a week,” Alliance Corporation CEO, Tommy Gumm. “During the footing stages, that’s about half of what we really need.”

Gumm says his contractors will have to continuously log the amount of pours per week in order to meet these standards and if things don’t improve soon, the completion of the project could be delayed.

“It’s a problem,” he said. “If this doesn’t pass sometime mid-summer, it’s going to have an adverse effect on our schedule.”

The Glasgow School Board will convene, again, early next month.
