Mary Jo Payne Houck went to be with her Lord on June 6, 2022. She was born on May 16, 1931 to Fred and Hazel Bowman of Dudley Shoals, NC. She was a kind soul who devoted her life toe her Lord, her family, and her students. Mary Jo was a first grade teacher for 30 years in many different school systems. She taught in the Glasgow Independent and Barren County systems as well as schools in North Carolina and Tennessee.
She was a faithful member of the Glasgow Baptist Church. She loved her church and the city of Glasgow. Upon retirement, Glasgow was the place she wanted to live the rest of her time here on earth. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents and her fist husband Mr. Jacob Ralph Payne, Jr. She was also preceded by her second husband Mr. Alvin Houck of Denver, NC.
Mrs. Houck is survived by her children Debbie Walbert (David) of Glasgow, KY and David Payne (Tammy) of Campbellsville, KY; four grandchildren: Todd Walbert (Stephanie) of Lexington, KY, Courtney Payne of Cave City, KY, Heather Bauer (Joey) of Louisville, KY and Kendra Benningfield of Dallas, TX; three great-grandchildren: Jake and Cooper Bauer of Louisville and Kate Shapiro of Lexington; a sister, Sandra Starnes of Hendersonville, NC; a niece Lisa Astin (Wade) of Horseshoe, NC; a great niece and great nephew: Hannah Astin and Walker Astin of Asheville, NC.
Mrs. Houck chose cremation. A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022 in the Chapel of Glasgow Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 12 noon until time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that all donations go directly to Glasgow Baptist Church or to BRAWA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.
