Glasgow EPB approves first phase of broadband upgrades

GLASGOW — The Glasgow Electric Plant Board is launching a major project to reimagine their broadband internet system.

Board members for the Glasgow EPB voted unanimously Tuesday evening to authorize the spending of $2.5 million for the construction of the project’s first phase, which will re-design the current hybrid fiber-coaxial system into a direct connection fiber optic broadband network.

This new direct fiber optic service from the Glasgow EPB will offer internet speeds up to 10 gigabytes per second, a speed faster than most internet-connected electronic devices are currently capable of processing. The reason for the upgrades is not only for faster speeds, but to create a more reliable broadband network that will also include low-latency features to help optimize videoconferencing and remote access systems for the growing number of people who work or attend their education from home.

GEPB Superintendent Dave Puskala spoke to the importance of the new broadband upgrades during Tuesday’s meeting, describing the project as “the next step to take for the Glasgow EPB to continue to be a leading broadband service provider in the city of Glasgow.”

The first phase of this fiber optic project will be constructed in the southwestern portion of the city of Glasgow, with a goal of offering fiber optic service to 1,000 customers in the area by the Summer of 2023. The eventual project will encompass the city limits of Glasgow and is expected to be completed by Summer of 2026.

While a complete list of who will be receiving the GEPB’s new fiber optic service first has not been released at this time, the Glasgow EPB is expected to release more information on the project in the coming days.
