FRANKFORT — Millions of dollars worth of unclaimed property await some Kentuckians who have still not filed claims to get their money.
Kentucky Treasurer Allison Ball announced in December she returned $150 million in unclaimed property. Kentuckians are able to search their name or business name with a tool available on the Secretary of the Treasury’s website. To see if you have unclaimed property, search your name at https://treasury.ky.gov/unclaimedproperty/Pages/overview.aspx.
“Treasurer Ball is a strong proponent of property rights and is committed to returning this money to the rightful owners, not the government,” a news release said. “In her first term, she returned nearly $89 million, more than any previous Kentucky State Treasurer had done in one term.”
The process is simple. A general inquiry will reveal if a certain person has unclaimed property. A range of how much money is available will be listed next to the name. Claimants must fill out a claim, which asks for identifying information and contact information. Once the claim is verified, a check is then sent to the claimant.
The Kentucky State Treasury has approximately $800 million in unclaimed property. Amounts range from one penny to $733,497.93. Some claims are eligible for the fast-tracking process. When Western Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky were struck by natural disasters, the Kentucky State Treasury expedited claims to those areas to provide help.
