Scotties advance in the 4th Region Tournament after thrilling overtime victory over Metcalfe County

Mar 7, 2024 | 12:21 PM

BOWLING GREEN – Tough play and great leadership were just two of the deciding factors in the Glasgow Scotties’ overtime victory over the Metcalfe County Hornets on Wednesday at WKU’s E.A. Diddle Arena.

“A lot of people counted us out and didn’t think we’d be at this particular point,” said coach William Buford. “They’re built for this. It means something to me to see our kids go out and fight and play as hard as they do to put theirselves in a position to be in the regional semi-finals.”

Sophomore guard Jerrick Martin led the Scotties in scoring with 20 points and tacked on 12 rebounds and 2 blocks as well. Other Glasgow scorers included, JoJo Driver (16 PTS), Quinn Nunley (13 PTS), Jaylen Bradley (11 PTS), J.C. Walbert (8 PTS), and Landon Minton (2 PTS).

“It means a lot, honestly to be the first team [at Glasgow] in 12 years to win a [region] game,” said senior guard, J.C. Walbert. “I knew we were gonna win [in overtime] because of the hard work we’ve put in during the summer and offseason.” Walbert has played a significant role for the Scotties this season, averaging 15.7 points/game on 44.6% shooting from field goal range. J.C. also drained the three-point buzzer-beater in the 15th district semi-finals to defeat Warren Central and send Glasgow to the 15th district championship game.

The down-to-the-wire matchup saw a high scoring first quarter with the edge going to the Hornets who took a 20-18 lead. In the second half, Glasgow came out shooting 6-13 from field goal range, outscoring Metcalfe County 16-10 and taking a 34-30 lead at the half. Third quarter action didn’t disappoint as both teams tied in scoring at 14 points, giving the edge to the Scotties, 48-44. However, Metcalfe County stormed back in the fourth quarter, shooting 63% from field goal range tying the game up at 60 to end regulation. In overtime, the Scotties found their grove going 4-4 from field goal range and hitting a clutch free-throw to send Glasgow into the semi-finals of the 4th Region Tournament.

Glasgow will now have a tough task ahead, taking on the defending state champion, Warren Central Dragons in the semi-finals of the 4th Region Tournament. The game is slated for a 7:30PM tip-off at WKU’s E.A. Diddle Arena with a spot in the finals on the line for both teams.
