KYTC urges vigilance for drivers travelling through Smiths Grove

By Mark Buckles May 15, 2024 | 12:07 PM

Contractors have kicked off extensive construction efforts aimed at widening and enhancing KY 101 near Interstate 65 in Smiths Grove.

Spearheaded by Buc-ee’s under an approved Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) permit, the project encompasses a series of infrastructure improvements to bolster traffic flow and safety in the area.

The scope of construction work encompasses several key elements, including the expansion of both the northbound and southbound I-65 off-ramps at the Exit 38 interchange. Additionally, new traffic signals are being installed at both ramps to optimize traffic management and enhance intersection safety. Furthermore, the project entails the construction of additional lanes and a roundabout on KY 101 to facilitate smoother connectivity with side streets. Wes Watt, public information officer with KYTC District 3, elaborated on the construction.

Motorists traversing KY 101 between I-65 and U.S. 68 should be prepared for significant changes in traffic patterns over the coming months. With a designated work zone established near mile point 7.8, drivers can anticipate lane closures, lane shifts, and intermittent flagged traffic operations.

Watt also spoke on the estimated completion date.

While delays are possible during this period, the construction endeavors aim to yield long-term benefits in terms of enhanced roadway functionality and safety.

Already, travelers have begun to navigate through newly implemented lane configurations, with guide signs providing essential navigation cues.

To ensure the safety of both motorists and construction personnel, it is imperative for drivers to adhere to all warning signs and exercise caution when traversing through the work zone.

As construction progresses, motorists are urged to remain vigilant, follow designated traffic routes, and stay within lanes demarcated by cones or barrels. By exercising patience and diligence, motorists can contribute to the seamless execution of construction activities while safeguarding their own well-being and that of workers on-site. The ongoing enhancements to KY 101 underscore a concerted effort to modernize infrastructure and enhance mobility in Warren County.

Through collaborative efforts between contractors, government agencies, and the community, the project aims to foster a safer and more efficient transportation network for residents and travelers alike.
