WCLU News Brief

Kentucky Sheriff Shawn Stines of Letcher County, who is accused of murder in the death of a district court judge, entered a not guilty plea Wednesday during his first court appearance.

The arraignment, which required a special judge, was held remotely and Stines’ appearance was not in person.

At this juncture no motive was presented by either side.

Special Judge Rupert Wilhoit asked him about his finances after Stines confirmed he wanted a court-appointed attorney.  Court-appointed attorneys are generally only used in cases of indigent parties, Stines stated that he owned two homes. Also, he is still considered the sheriff and makes a salary of $115,000 annually.

This is a developing story.
