Dozens of Barren County residents flocked to the Barren County Middle School cafeteria to hear a presentation from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet concerning construction proposed at the intersection of Roseville Road and Trojan Trail.
The construction the transportation cabinet announced at the end of September involves installing a single-lane roundabout at the intersection that will be large enough to accommodate larger vehicles like school buses and the replacement of the narrow bridge over South Fork Beaver Creek on Roseville Road.
According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Engineer Stewart Lich, who gave a 15-minute presentation, the goal of the roundabout is to provide a safer environment — especially with younger drivers — than is provided by a more customary 4-way stop and to slow down traffic as it enters the urban city of Glasgow while providing better “aesthetics” than a traffic light.
Audio PlayerAlong with the roundabout, they also plan to replace the bridge with 11-foot-wide lanes with 4-foot-wide shoulders, which will result in the new bridge being six feet wider than the current one. Lich said this bridge construction will be done without closing Roseville Road.
Audio PlayerOverall, Lich said this will be a roughly $4.7 million project with $375,000 used for right-of-way purchases, $1 million used for utility relocation and $3.3 million used for actual construction. Transportation Cabinet Public Information Officer Wes Watt said the money has already been “federally earmarked” for this project.
Audio PlayerAllen Garmon, who lives near the intersection, said there were better places in the county that the cabinet could spend almost $5 million dollars.
Audio PlayerWatt said the public hearing was a very early step, and the actual construction would likely not begin until 2026.
