Oliver Gene Woods (Gene), was born, October 4, 1941, in Park City, Kentucky, son of the late Frank Woods, Jr. and Pauline Davidson Woods. Gene graduated from Ralph Bunche High School in Glasgow, Kentucky where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in both basketball and baseball. Gene was noted for being the best shot blocker in the 5th Region and eventually had a tryout for the Pittsburg Pirates in 1961. Gene enlisted as Private with the United States Army in 1964. As a lifelong member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Gene was devoted and dedicated, serving in many capacities over the years. He was a former Chairman of the Deacon Board, Trustee, Treasurer, Youth Advisor and Sunday School Teacher.
Gene married the love of his life Ruby Allen, on May 18, 1968, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church. This union was blessed with Renee, Michael, and Jonathan. Over the years grandchildren have filled their home and new adventures have taken place. Since retiring from General Motors Corvette plant in 2006, Gene was able to spend time doing what he loved best, which was hunting with his sons and son in-law, fishing with his grandson, supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events, and playing golf with his longtime friend Ed McDowell. An avid golfer, Gene was recognized by Park Mammoth Resort for a “Hole in One” on hole #7 on November 5, 2004.
He was a servant of God, husband, dad, grandad, friend to all, and mentor to many. On Friday, November 15, 2024, he transitioned from this world we know while in the comfort of his home with loved ones by his side. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Paul and Elvin Woods.
Cherishing the memory of Oliver Gene Woods, he leaves his loving wife of 56 years, Ruby Allen Woods; daughter, Renee (Roland) Shelton; sons, Michael (Emilee) Woods and Jonathan (Haley) Woods; grandchildren, Braxton, Bentley, Nevaeh, Madisynn and Marlow; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
