With the Super Bowl right around the corner, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reminds Kentuckians to make responsible choices especially behind the wheel.
The release asks anyone “hosting or attending Super Bowl festivities on Sunday” to keep impaired drivers off the road so everyone can make it home safely on game night.
As we gather to enjoy the big game, let’s look out for each other,” said Governor Andy Beshear. “Plan ahead for a safe ride home.”
According to the transportation cabinet, preliminary numbers indicate 126 people in Kentucky were killed in crashes that involved a drunk driver in 2024.
To prevent drunk driving-related crashes, the cabinet released five tips:
- Before festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night;
- If impaired, use a ride-booking company or taxi, call a sober friend or family member,
or use public transportation; - If you see an impaired driver, safely pull over and contact law enforcement. You may
dial the Kentucky State Police toll-free line directly at 800-222-5555 or call 911; - If you know people who are about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and
help them make other arrangements to get to their destination; and - Wear a seat belt! It is not only the law, it’s your best defense against an impaired
driver. Buckling up helps prevent injury and death if involved in a crash.
The Kentucky State Police Post 3 announced in a press release this week that troopers are taking to the road to ensure everyone gets to and from their game-day celebrations safely as part of the national Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, which focuses on reducing traffic crashes and preventing impaired driving, making the roads safer for everyone.
“We want to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the Superbowl and the commercials that come with it.” said KSP Post 3 Captain Timothy Adams. “But most of all, the real goal is for everyone to make it home safely. Be punctual, drive responsibly and clear the roadways of any negativity.”
Similarly, the state police included four safe-driving tips:
- Have a Game Plan – If you plan to drink during your Super Bowl festivities, arrange a designated driver, call a ride-share service or stay overnight at your host’s house.
- Wear Your Safety Gear – Buckling up is your best defense against impaired or distracted drivers. Remember, seatbelts save lives.
- Give the Playmakers Room – Move over for first responders and emergency vehicles. Kentucky law requires motorists to switch lanes or slow down to ensure safety.
- Stay Focused – Keep distractions like your phone on the sidelines while driving. Stay alert and keep your eyes on the road.
