The Caverna Colonels are back in the Boys’ 18th District Tournament title game. It’s been seven years since they last won a first-round tournament game. They did so this time by beating LaRue County, 65-63, at LaRue.
A hot start by Jaylin Craine set the tone early for the Colonels. He scored 10 of their 25 first-quarter points, and pushed his team to a 25-14 lead after one.
From there, the Hawks clawed their way back into the contest. Caverna led 40-30 at halftime and 49-47 headed into the fourth quarter.
Craine scored seven in the final period, and Russell Williams hit a key 3-pointer.
LaRue had a look with 4.2 seconds left to win the game, but a solid close out on the shooter by Katavian Fryar forced an errant shot. Cortavian Maxey grabbed the rebound, escaped attempts by the Hawks to foul him, and ran out the clock.
