Frank Weedon Shook, III of Scottsville died on Monday, March 17th, at his home surrounded by his wife and children. Frank was born on May 25, 1936 in Louisville, Kentucky to Frank W. Shook, Jr. and Carolyn Williams Shook. He was a graduate of Shawnee High School, class of 1954 and attended the University of Louisville and graduated in the class of 1958. He was, and remained, a proud Louisville Cardinal to the end. Upon graduation, Frank worked for Travelers Insurance Company and enlisted in the U.S Army Reserve. Frank married Martha Wooten Shook of Scottsville on June 10, 1961. He and Martha made their home in Louisville and welcomed three children to their home. They were members of Broadway Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
In 1974, Frank and Martha moved their young family to Scottsville, where he would continue his career in insurance as he joined his father-in-law at Wooten Insurance Agency. He fully embraced life in a small town as he became an avid gardener and lake enthusiast.
During these years, Frank also served several terms as trial commissioner for Allen and Simpson counties. After retiring from his career in insurance, he obtained his realtor’s license. Frank found the work in both of these careers rewarding.
Frank was a member of Scottsville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years and enjoyed singing in the choir. He and a friend began a hospital ministry to church members which blessed all involved. His rotation on the Wednesday night meal team with the pastor and friends was always thoroughly enjoyed.
Frank was a member and past president of both the Scottsville Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid reader, fisherman, and loved barbershop music. He and Martha made many trips to enjoy and support Horse Cave Theatre.
In all of Frank’s work and service the common thread was people. He loved interacting with people of all ages and occupations and never met a stranger. He was always quick with a warm handshake, a pat on the back, and a corny joke.
Frank was happiest when surrounded by his family. He supported his wife, three children, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren in any way possible. From lazy days on the lake, marching band festivals, school musicals, and special church music programs, to soccer, volleyball, and baseball games, he was always there, cheering for his family.
Frank is survived by his wife Martha of 63 years, children Elizabeth (John) Buchanon, of Scottsville, Danny (Susie) Shook of Brandenburg, and Susan (Deron) Smith of Lexington, grandchildren Jackson (Cate) Buchanon, Caroline Buchanon, Clark (Emily) Smith, Virginia Smith, Sarah Shook, and Ben Shook, great-grandchildren Evelyn, Georgiana, and Penny Buchanon. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph W. (Claudia) Shook of New York, two nieces, Alison (Brian) Windham, and Claudia (Mark) Casanova, a sister-in-law Linda (Doug) McKinley, a nephew Matt (Samantha) McKinley, and a niece Laura (Dan) Hughes.
The family request memorial donation be made to the Scottsville Baptist Church or Gideons International.
