Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library recently announced the launch of “a new initiative designed to showcase and support authors from Barren County and the surrounding area.”

The library’s Local Author Collection will provide community writers a platform to share their work and allow “readers to discover homegrown talent,” according to the library press release.

“Our library is dedicated to connecting people with great books, and we believe some of the best stories come from right here in our own community,” Adult Services Manager Amy Tollison said. “This collection is a way to recognize and celebrate the creativity of local authors while making their work more accessible to readers in our area.”

Barren County authors, as well as authors from neighboring counties, are invited to submit their books for consideration. Both self-published and traditionally published books are eligible, “though self-published books must be donated, while traditionally published books may be considered for purchase,” according to the library.

“Books accepted into the collection will be housed in the library and included in its online catalog, making them available for checkout by patrons,” the release states.

To be eligible for inclusion, books must meet the following criteria:
• Professionally printed and bound (no spiral-bound or unbound items)
• Recently published (within the last three years)
• In new or like-new condition
• Suitable for adult audiences (Children’s and YA authors should contact Youth Services)

Interested authors should read the collection policy and must complete a Local Author Collection Submission Form, available online at weldonpubliclibrary.org or in person at the library. A copy of the book should be submitted at the Circulation Desk or mailed, attention Local Author Collection.

“Libraries have always been a place where stories come to life,”  Tollison said. “Now, local voices will be a greater part of that tradition.”
