Today, March 24, begins the free countywide cleanup.

Barren County Solid Waste Coordinator Marcus Thurman said they are extending the event to two weeks instead of one “to give the extra time for people to have a chance to participate.” The cleanup begins on March 24 and goes until Friday, April 4, with a half-day on Saturday, March 29.

Items like appliances, couches, dressers, mattresses and recliners will be accepted, while tires, batteries, liquids, oils and pesticides will not be. Small items need to be bagged or boxed, according to the flyer.

The event will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The city of Glasgow is also holding its cleanup week from today until March 28. City residents wanting to avail themselves of this opportunity should place items on the curb during their normal garbage pickup time, bag or box small items and bundle tree or shrub clippings no longer than 3 feet. The Municipality also asks residents to avoid placing disposables under trees, around mailboxes or utility lines.

For Glasgow’s cleanup week some unacceptable items include appliances — which can be disposed of at the landfill year-round — pesticides, auto batteries, asbestos, large tree limbs and whole trees, liquids, auto parts, tires and construction materials.
