Almost 600 students took part in Farm Safety Day, a collaborative effort between Barren County 4-H and Barren County Middle School FFA members in the gymnasium of Barren County Middle School on March 20.

The event objective was to create stronger agriculture safety awareness. It featured interactive safety stations, crafted by students and community volunteers, that addressed critical topics including animal safety, ATV safety, nutrition and health awareness, and mental health awareness.

Participants engaged in hands-on activities and informative demonstrations, bringing awareness and understanding of various safety practices, which in some instances, can mean the difference between life and death. By educating youth with knowledge and skills, the Farm Safety Day promoted a culture of safety, and encouraged camaraderie and teamwork among the students, highlighting the importance of community in agricultural education and youth development.

BCMS students Hardison Birge and Lilleigh Bennet said that the program was helpful in reminding them of the importance of safety when working on the farm.

“I loved the opportunity to engage and educate students about how to live healthier, safer lives,” BCMS FFA President and presenter Anna Cline said.

“I love how it taught kids about the importance of our safety in a fun way,’’ added Addisen Reed, BCMS FFA vice president.

The event was hosted in conjunction with Agriculture Education Week, which was celebrated March 17-21 statewide “to promote agriculture education, awareness, and advocacy for an industry that is pivotal to our economy.”

Based on student response this event was successful in reiterating safe and healthy farming practices.
