Edwin “Doyle” Smith passed away peacefully in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 26, 2025, at 2:02 AM at the age of 89.
Born on November 1, 1935, in Bristow, Warren County, Kentucky, Doyle was the beloved son of William Aubrey Smith and Hattie Roberson Smith. He was a devoted son, brother, father, papaw, neighbor, and dear friend. Doyle graduated from Bristow High School and worked as a painter before joining Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co. in Lexington, Kentucky. He later continued his career at Export Leaf Co. in Wilson, North Carolina, where he worked until his retirement. He spent the last three decades of his life in Louisville, Kentucky where he cherished time with his family and close friends. Doyle had a deep love for country and gospel music, a strong cup of black coffee, running and wellness, and sharing stories about his cherished family and upbringing at Sunnyside.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Anna Rosetta Milam Smith and Annie Ruth King Smith; his sister Linda Faye Boston; his brothers Wendell Reed Smith and William Rodney Smith; his grandson Vincent Aubrey Smith; his nephew Terry Wayne Boston; his great-nephew Joel Allen Gaddis; and his stepson John Gregory Smith.
Doyle is survived by his son, Mark Dewaine Smith, and wife Elizabeth Ann Smith; his granddaughter, Madelyne Elizabeth Smith; his niece, Tonia Boston Gaddis, and her husband Allen Gaddis, along with their lovely grandchildren; and his nephew, William Travis Boston, and partner Jay Garner.
He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Linda Hood and Susie Smith; step-grandchildren Christy Savage and family, Leia Smith, Lee Smith, and Sabin Thompson, as well as a host of extended family and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 31, at Hardy & Son Funeral Home in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by the service at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
