Sherman Carter Barnhart Architects will handle “everything” on the Agriculture Exposition Center until the construction packet, Barren County Judge-Executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said after the seven magistrates approved the contract at the April 1 Barren County Fiscal Court meeting.
The now-signed contract is for $400,000 and uses $1 million given to the county by the Kentucky Senate and House of Representatives “to get the project going” since, with Hart County’s support, it has been deemed a multi-county project. Byrd said the contract gets the project “up to” a construction bid package, at which time the architects’ services might be retained for an additional fee.
Byrd began conversations about the ag expo center, which will adjoin the Cave Area Conference Center, in 2023 with a “pitch meeting” that revived the idea from its roughly two-decade dormancy. The meeting included some local, state and federal people, including leaders from Hart and Edmonson counties.

The fiscal court magistrates also unanimously approved the commonwealth’s lease agreement that allows the Commonwealth’s Attorney, and his office, to move into the second floor of the Barren County Government Center, which is now vacant since the Property Valuation Administration and the Barren River Drug Task Force have moved to the Barren County Development Center.
The commonwealth will pay the Barren County Fiscal $14,865 quarterly and, according to the contract, the county will provide janitorial services, utilities and 15 undesignated parking spots. The contract also specifies the county will “install electronic locks on interior doors” and “ADA compliant automatic doors.”
The next Barren County Fiscal Court meeting is scheduled for April 15.
