A week before constructing a garden behind Red Cross Elementary, members of Barren County High School’s Future Farmers of America chapter demonstrated their knowledge of agriculture at their regional competition at Western Kentucky University. Several students placed at the event and will advance to state this summer in Lexington.

Matthew Estes, Abigail Coleman, Addy Allen, Adeline Coleman, Hallie Hughes, Jonna Ford and Jacob Wilson captured first place in Parliamentary Procedure. Kennedy Gill, Ella Hoggard, Anna Kate Alexander and Anne Claire Garmon took top honors in Senior Agriculture Quiz Bowl.

“The chapter had a very, very good outing this year,” said Matthew Estes, president of Barren County’s FFA. “We’re sending a lot of kids to state to compete.”

The following Barren County students also placed in their respective events and qualified for state: Estes, first place in Prepared Public Speaking; Alexander, first, Extemporaneous Public Speaking; Garmon, first, Dairy Public Speaking; Addison Bow, first, Turf and Lawn Speaking; Gracie Jones, second, Jr. FFA Quiz Bowl; and Alana Houchens, second, Floral Public Speaking.

Houchens, reporter for the high school’s FFA chapter, said a lot of work went into these results, and that she really enjoys being a part of this organization.

“You want to find the group that you can have fun with,” she said. “I’ve definitely found that in FFA.

“Friendships. Connections. All that stuff.”

Estes added that FFA provides him with many networking opportunities.

“I’m going to college at UK, and I already know almost everybody that’s going to be living on my dorm floor because we’re all ag students. We’re all FFA members,” he said. “It’s really cool to go to state convention or state fair and you’re able to see your friends that you only see four or five times a year.

“Everybody remembers everybody’s names and asks what’s going on back at home. It’s really special.”

Barren County students were also recognized with a Superior Rating in their respective categories: Adeline Coleman, Nursery and Landscape Public Speaking; Addy Allen, Horse Public Speaking; Jonna Ford, Beef Public Speaking; Brooklyn Russell, Small Animal Public Speaking; Abigail Coleman, Crop Public Speaking; Hallie Hughes, Creed Speaking; Holland Kelsay, Fruit and Vegetable Public Speaking; Jay Houchens, Poultry Public Speaking; Bridgette Smith, Ag Mechanics Public Speaking; Avery Chapman, Swine Public Speaking; Abbey Turner, Greenhouse Public Speaking; Briley Creekmore, Sheep and Goat Public Speaking; and Gracie Jones, Lily Turner, Jacob Wilson and Hallie Hughes, Record Keeping.

“It was probably the biggest turnout we’ve ever had as a chapter at the regional level,” Barren County FFA adviser Andy Moore said. “They’ve raised the bar for the chapter, the legacy of the program.”
