After evacuating all animals on Thursday afternoon, The Barren River Animal Welfare Association is requesting donations of paper towels, Lysol wipes, Dawn Dish Soap, Canned Pedigree Puppy Food and Clorox Bleach.
BRAWA’s General Manager Connie Greer said the choice to evacuate the Trojan Trail facility was precautionary and that the berm they recently had built did its job keeping the water out of the shelter.
“Had we not had the berm we would have…flooded,” Greer said. “Our ditch line was full the entire time and the [berm] pump never stopped; it ran and ran and ran. The berm did its job.”
Members of BRAWA’s staff, Glasgow police officers and animal control personnel moved the 111 animals to the gym of the old Happy Valley Elementary School on West Cherry Street in roughly 30 minutes. Greer said she got permission to do so from Glasgow Independent Schools Superintendent Chad Muhlenkamp and that the shelter used some of the classrooms for animals to play in.
Greer said due to the temporary location most of the shelter’s supplies that would normally last a month are depleting faster than usual.
“Basically all of our supplies are over there,” Greer said. “Our entire stock that we had that should have sustained us for a couple weeks, it’s taking twice — if not three times — the amount to clean the way we’re having to clean.”
BRAWA is back open today, April 7, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
