Four people are dead following the multiday severe weather that battered the commonwealth for four days at the beginning of April.

In his April 7 statewide flooding update livestream, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported that two more people have died.

“Four days of severe storms have brought devastation to so many communities across our commonwealth,” Beshear said. “We’ve had search-and-rescue teams working around the clock to support these communities…what we have seen is rescue after rescue after rescue that turned what could have been a very deadly event into one where sadly we’ve lost two individuals.”

In the Hickory Hills area of Frankfort, emergency crews found the body of nine-year-old Gabriel Andrews, who had been swept away by the flood water while walking to his school bus stop, the Franklin County coroner reported, and in Nelson County a 74-year-old woman was confirmed dead after being submerged while trapped in her vehicle.

Beshear also mentioned the search for 27-year-old Lee Chandler, whose body was found in the afternoon of April 7 and, later, a 65-year-old Trigg County man, who was later identified to be David Duncan.

This brings the death toll up to four, which is far less than the 24 deaths that resulted from the severe weather in February.

“I just want to stress that we do not want to lose another individual, and whether or not we do is going to mainly depend on the decisions that people make here until the event is over,” Beshear said. “This event isn’t over until the waters have receded, until the areas that have flooded are fully dry, until we don’t have saturated ground that could create mudslides. I’m asking everybody to just be careful.”

There are still several county roads that are closed due to water, they can be viewed here. Also, there are portions of four state roads in Barren County that are closed, those can be viewed here.
