A tornado has been confirmed by the National Weather Service to have touched down in Northern Barren County on April 3.

The National Weather Service reported that the tornado touched down along Jack Turner Road, the weather service states, roughly three and a half miles from Cave City. After completely destroying an “older wooden barn,” it went over farmland for one mile “before causing damage to several structures along Spillman Road, which included taking off parts of several barn roofs.”

It was as the tornado moved across U.S. 31E where the service estimates the tornado became an EF2 due to “a roof being blown off a single story home [and] thrown a quarter of a mile downstream.” An EF2 tornado is one “with winds between 111 and 135 mph, causing considerable damage like torn roofs, shifted foundations, and destroyed mobile homes.” Several other barns and buildings were damaged in this area, the weather service states.

Another area of “significant structural damage” was observed along Hiseville-Bear Wallow Road with “scattered, snapped and uprooted trees” observed in the area as well as  a “substantial loss of roofing material” and a one residence with a entire roof taken off.

“Damage intensity lessened considerably beyond this point, with minor tree damage noted just west of Rock Springs Church Road, indicative of an EF0 strength,” the weather service report states. ” The tornado lifted near Rock Springs Church Road, about 0.6 miles south of the Hart County line.”

The tornado lasted only 5 minutes; beginning at 1:04 a.m. and ending at 1:09 a.m., according to the weather service. One injury was reported, but no fatalities.
