The Barren River Area Development District announced at its Dec. 18 board meeting the design firm Stengel Hill has been selected for component one of the Anchor Project. Component one will focus on the design and construction of a regional mental health crisis intake center to be operated by LifeSkills, Inc. Earlier this year BRADD was the recipient of a state funding allocation from the Kentucky General Assembly to pilot a regional substance abuse project. The project, consisting of three components, has become the region’s response to the opioid crisis, named the Anchor Project.
Morgantown Mayor Billy Phelps chaired the board’s Policy & Review committee, which reviewed submissions from the October 30, 2024 release for request for qualifications, issued by the agency. “Our committee was impressed by Stengel Hill’s dedication to incorporating community input, innovative design solutions, and their track record for delivering projects that stand the test of time,” said Phelps. “We believe their expertise aligns perfectly with our vision of creating a landmark that will serve as a focal point for much needed help for our region.” The committee made their recommendation to the executive board for approval.
Stengel Hill, a full service architectural and interior design firm based in Louisville, Kentucky is ranked nationally for their work in modern healthcare. Their portfolio of successful community-centered projects and their collaborative vision for the Anchor Project stood out among the competitive field of proposals. Paul Edwards, Principal for Stengel Hill had this to say, “Stengel Hill is honored to partner with BRADD and LifeSkills on the design and development of the Anchor Project. We share the team’s commitment to enhancing mental health and addiction services for the community and are excited to lead a project that will serve as a vital lifeline for so many. We aim to support this region’s residents with innovative design solutions that foster healing and recovery within this new and exciting facility!”
Brooke Edwards, BRADDs Associate Director of the newly created Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP) adds, “We are excited to get this inaugural component of the Anchor Project started and look forward to working with Stengel Hill and their talented team, alongside our friends at LifeSkills to get the design work completed.” The three-pillar approach supports a network of comprehensive resources and research, bringing the first ever response model of its kind to the region and Commonwealth.
LifeSkills, Inc. CEO, Joe Dan Beavers stated, “This partnership represents a turning point in how we serve our community members experiencing mental health crises. Working alongside Stengel Hill and BRADD, we have an opportunity to create something truly transformative for South Central Kentucky.” Stengel Hill, BRADD and LifeSkills will begin collaborations immediately.
BRADD is the federally designated regional economic development agency and Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living, serving ten counties in South Central KY since 1968. For more information about the Anchor Project click the link below.
