With the new year comes new laws, and in Kentucky the General Assembly was busy creating new legislation — more than 200 — that goes into effect on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
The first law relates to medical cannabis. Beginning on Wednesday, licensed dispensaries can start selling the medical product — though the law requires the medicinal cannabis to be grown in the state so it is unlikely dispensaries will have products available on Jan. 1. In the same vein, people will be able to apply for a medical cannabis card, assuming they meet the requirements.
Another deals with license renewals. As previously reported, Kentuckians will have to undergo a vision screening in order to renew their driver’s licenses.
“Few things are more important for safe driving than good eyesight,” the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet stated in a release. “That’s why vision screening will be required in Kentucky next year for anyone renewing a Kentucky driver’s license.”
The cabinet states vision screenings will be free at any regional licensing office “at the time of license renewal.”
In the transportation sphere, people will also renew their specialty plate registrations in their birth month instead of in December.
House Bill 11 sought to curb the use of vape products among Kentucky’s youth. On Jan. 1 retailers can only sell vaping products approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has only approved 23 out of more than a million.
