As the weather warms, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced the beginning of its spraying season for state-maintained roads.

“There’s a lot more than paving when it comes to road work,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray in a press release. “Controlling noxious plants is a key part of maintaining safe roads as they can damage drainage systems; some can reduce visibility, while others attract wildlife closer to our roads and create additional dangers for Kentucky drivers.”

Noxious weeds — like Spotted Knapweed or Canada Thistle — can “invade and destroy roadside turf” that can make the area vulnerable to erosion. Species like Kudzu can smother native plants through rapid reproduction and long-term persistence and others like Amur Honeysuckle, if left to mature, can grow over 20 feet tall and wide, reducing roadway visibility and attracting wildlife closer to roadways, the press release states.

Motorists are reminded to use extra caution when crews spraying for weeds are out on the roadways.

There are several state-maintained roads in Barren County including Ky. 90, U.S. 68, U.S. 31-E, Ky. 1297 and Interstate 65. A full list of state roads are available here.

Barren County residents who are treating noxious weeds on private property adjacent to state-owned rights of way may request highway crews to treat listed vegetation. Application forms are available upon request from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 office.
