Lucretia Louise Purcell

By Nellie Pickett Mar 18, 2025 | 2:13 PM

Lucretia Louise Purcell, age 102, of Short Creek community, peacefully departed this life to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, (March 17, 2025) at Grayson Nursing and Rehab in Leitchfield, KY.

She was born on June 4, 1922, in the Duff community to the Reverend Thomas E. and Bessie Frank Carter, the second of five children.

She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy-two plus years, William Cecil Purcell, whom she married on September 27, 1940, her son, Clarence E. Purcell, a daughter-in-law, Gloria Fletcher Purcell; two brothers, Herman and Edgar Carter; and sisters, Gladys Probus and Elnora Cockrill.

She is survived by a son, James C. (Jim) and daughter-in-law June Purcell of the Sinks community; five grandchildren, Tracey Fulkerson (Gary) of the Sinks community, Darren Purcell (Jane) of Norman, Oklahoma, Scott Purcell (Jennifer) of Paducah, KY, Allen Tabor (Kelly) of Leitchfield, and James H. Tabor (Becca) of Short Creek. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Shelby Collins (Grant), Seth Elmore, Sophia Blanton (Brad), Robert Purcell and Ethan Purcell; and one great-great-grandchild, Henry Bennett Blanton.

Louise was a homemaker, housewife, part-time farm hand, and mother, who loved to sew, cook, read, work crossword puzzles, watch Jeopardy on TV, and nature.

She and Cecil loved to travel in their motor home to Bluegrass Music Festivals in North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia, as well as the Great Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg. They toured the West and Northwest each fall season for nearly twenty years, and made three round trips in their motor coach to Alaska.

One of my mom’s greatest joys was to have guests in her home with their feet under her dining table, enjoying a home-cooked meal that she had prepared just for them.
