As a phoenix rises from ashes, so too does Glasgow’s Big Lots. The store that was slated for closure and cleared its shelves with a multi-week clearance sale is now hiring.

Store Manager Jeff Jeakles said Variety Wholesalers bought the Glasgow store at 942 Happy Valley Road, and they were conducting walk-in interviews to hire people to restock the now empty store. Interviews are Wednesday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Future hiring dates are also possible.

In addition to walk-in interviews, online job site Indeed features a Big Lots store associate and stocker position for Glasgow.

“It’s going to be a little different then it was, but when a store comes back from what it was [it will be different],” Jeakles said.

On Dec. 23, after declaring chapter 11 bankruptcy and its deal with Nexus Capital Management fell through, the discount retailer announced it was commencing “going out of business” sales at all remaining stores. The Glasgow location’s fate was further steeped in uncertainty when the company announced it had agreed to a sale with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners “that enables the transfer of Big Lots assets, including stores, distribution centers, and intellectual property to other retailers and companies, including Variety Wholesalers, Inc.”

Variety Wholesalers’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing Jeff King said in an interview with Furniture Today that the BroyHill brand was not included in the acquisition and furniture would not be as much of Big Lots’ focus.

“In the initial opening, furniture will not play as prominent a part in the merchandise selection,” King said. “That doesn’t mean as we work through the stores, we won’t add furniture to the mix.”

Jeakles said he is pleased to see Big Lots continue to operate in Glasgow. “It’s been a staple in this community,” he said.

The company plans to soft open roughly 220 stores, according to King’s interview, with the first nine soft openings scheduled for April 10. Kentucky’s Mt. Sterling location appears in the list of the first nine.

Jeakles said he is unsure of the specifics, but said it appeared the soft opening would be in May.

According to King’s interview with Furniture Today, the “second wave” of soft openings is planned for May 1 with the third planned for May 15.
