Barren County Middle School students gathered around a mobile classroom on Wednesday and learned about various aspects of dairy farming.

This activity, which included a milking demonstration with a cow, was in celebration of Agriculture Education Week, said Felicia Dalton, agriculture teacher and FFA adviser at the middle school.

“A lot of folks are at least one to two generations, if not more, removed from the farm,” Dalton said. “So I wanted them to be able to see where their food comes from and the work that actually goes into getting it.”

Israel Mullins, of Southland Dairy Farmers, said he speaks with students about dairy nutrition and the “13 essential nutrients and vitamins you get from dairy.”

“We also will teach kids about modern farm practices,” Mullins said. “So we talk about what we do on the farm to get milk production.”

Mullins said he also explains how farmers process and pasteurize milk, adding that he really enjoys visiting different schools and sharing his passion.

“I love cattle,” he said. “I have since I was a little kid. And I like teaching as well.”
