Gov. Andy Beshear has ordered flags at all state buildings lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Thursday, March 20, 2025, in honor of a sergeant with the Department of Corrections who died while on duty.

Sgt. George Ramirez of the Kentucky State Reformatory in Oldham County died in a vehicle crash while traveling to downtown Louisville on the evening of March 10. Ramirez was guarding an incarcerated person who was heading to a Louisville hospital, according to the Supporting Heroes organization.

A memorial service for Ramirez will be held Thursday at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Gov. Beshear encourages all individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.
