Few incumbents have refiled for 2022 election

GLASGOW, Ky. — Local incumbents are slow to file this year as Kentucky’s official filing window for public office looms about three weeks away. The filing window closes Jan. 7, 2022.

Offices up for election in the new year include several state and local seats. Those in the locality include judge seats and municipal government. Here’s the breakdown.

Who’s filed?

Most recently, one incumbent refiled for election. Several newcomers have filed for office, too.

County Officers

These offices are elected every four years along with all county officers. There are seven constable districts to align with the magisterial districts.

Barren County Judge Executive

Jamie B. Byrd (R) is the only candidate to file. Micheal Hale, the incumbent, has not refiled.

Barren County Magistrates

Barren County has seven magisterial districts. The office is elected every four years. No incumbents have filed.

  • District 2 — Kim Lambert (R), Derek Scott Pedigo (R) and Jesse Muse (R). The incumbent is Trent Riddle (D).
  • District 3 — Tim Durham (R)
  • District 4 — Chris Eaton (D). The incumbent is Tim Coomer (R)
  • District 6 — Ronnie Stinson (D)
  • District 7 — Matt Keith (R)

Barren County Constables

  • District 4 — Charles E. Shaw (D)
  • District 5 — Gary Allen Thomas (D)
  • District 6 — Jason Logsdon (R)

Barren County Jailer

  • Aaron Bennett (R) — the incumbent
  • Cody Huff (D)
  • Chris Pulley (R)
  • Aaron Shirley (R)

Barren County Sheriff

  • Kent Keen (D) — the incumbent.
  • Guy Turcotte (R)
  • Charles Bunch (R)

Barren County Attorney

  • Kathryn Thomas (D) — the incumbent.
  • Mike Richardson (R)

Barren County Clerk

  • Helena Chase Birdwell (R) — the incumbent.

Barren County Coroner

  • Tim Gibson (D) — the incumbent.

Barren County Property Valuation Administrator (PVA)

  • Kimberly Powell Shipley — the incumbent.

City Officers

The mayor and city council races are non-partisan which means candidates do not file with a party attached. Only seven of Kentucky’s 416 cities hold partisan elections, according to the Kentucky League of Cities.

Glasgow City Council

  • James “Happy” Neal — an incumbent.

Glasgow City Mayor

  • Henry Royse is the lone candidate, thus far.

What’s next?

Those wishing to change their party affiliation to vote in the primary election must do so by Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.

The official filing deadline is Friday, Jan. 7, 2022 at 4 p.m.. The filing window opened Nov. 3, 2021. Candidates’ names will be drawn in offices of Secretary of State and county clerks Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022.

The Secretary of State will certify candidates’ names to county clerks Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022.

The primary election is slated for Tuesday, May 17, 2022. Polls will be open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What other races are on the ballots in 2022?

As for local races, school boards will appear on the ballots. District and Circuit Judge seats will also appear.

In the way of state races, several other judicial seats are up for election. Those include judges on the Court of Appeals and Justices of the Supreme Court in Districts 1, 2, 4 and 6. The even numbered Kentucky Senate seats and all Kentucky House seats will appear.

And national races pertaining to Kentucky include U.S. Senate and House seats.
