GLASGOW — Just in time for Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday, Baker Cowan slipped a greeting into an envelope and sent it on its way to London. Days later, he received a token in return.

Baker, 6, has gleaned an interest about the royals for a while. And rather than thinking about their lives, he decided to inquire about them in hopes of receiving a tangible item in return.

He thought of a greeting, wrote a letter and sent it on its way to Buckingham Palace to commemorate the queen’s 96th birthday, which was April 21.

“It took a long time for her to write me,” he said. “I thought the mailman threw it away or didn’t take the letter.”

Someone got it to London and back.

Baker received a sealed envelope with a stamp of approval that his letter had been received at Buckingham Palace sometime in May. The Royal Cipher was prominently stamped, too.

“She has the money that we have!” Baker said. “She gave me a dollar, and it looked just like ours.”

One U.S. dollar was stashed away in the envelope with the letter he received from the queen’s residence at Windsor Castle. The letter described appreciation for his greeting.

“In this historic year of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Her Majesty is most grateful for your thoughtfulness in writing at this time,” the royal mail said.

The queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee last weekend, which marked 70 years of service to the United Kingdom. One thing hasn’t changed during her reign – a public love of horses and Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs.

Baker said a horseback ride with Her Majesty might be the icing on the cake. But the dogs’ continued presence will do for now.

“I like them because I like their face, and I like their little bitty legs.”

He is the son of Caleb and Amanda Cowan of Glasgow.
